The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Last week I set foot in a movie theater for the first time in seven years. After watching An Unexpected Journey, the first movie in Peter Jackson’s Hobbit trilogy, on DVD, my dad and I went to the Majestic Cinema to see “The Desolation of Smaug”.

The free popcorn and reclining seats at the theater didn’t hurt anything but I definitely enjoyed it. But no, this isn’t an advertisement for cinemas, I have a different agenda for this post. Before going to the theater, I made up some gospel tracts relating to the movie to hand out. The QR Code (made at goqr.me) and short link lead to a post on John Piper’s blog (written by a guest author), DesiringGod.com. You can see the full article at http://www.desiringgod.org/blog/posts/the-allure-of-middle-earth.

The post describes how we all have a longing for the true king, Jesus, and how J.R.R. Tolkien taps into that desire in his books, I encourage you to read it. You can also download copies of the tract I made to hand out at theaters or place in the movie case if you rent The Desolation of Smaug. Click the image above or this link to get a printable PDF of the file.

If you use the tracts, please let me know in the comments below!
