Spiritual Reasons for Jesus Coming

Hello! My friend, Justin, and I are partnering up to write a mini series on Christmas. He has written a post about “The History of Christmas”, and I wrote this post about the spiritual side of Christmas. You can see his post here. So, here we go;

Why did Jesus have to come? Well, the obvious reason is because we needed a savior. In Genesis 3, man disobeyed God. God gave Adam and Eve (the first humans that God created) certain parameters for living in the perfect world He created for them. They broke those rules God gave them. Therefore, sin and death entered the world, causing the world to become so corrupt. So corrupt in fact that God had to send a world-wide flood to destroy everyone and everything on the earth, except for Noah and his family; the only righteous people left. You can tell that things were in pretty bad shape. For many of us, we probably would just have destroyed the whole earth and started again. But God loved us. He loved us so much that He was willing to put up with us. Even though

“[We] all have sinned and fallen short… (Romans 3:23)

However, God is also just and couldn’t let people who sinned go unpunished. So, He needed to make a way for us to justify (make right) our sins. How could we do that? Could we just work hard enough and make up for it? Well, actually, not. I’ll explain why.
First of all, in the book of Hebrews, chapter 9 verse 22 we learn that;

…without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.

So, something must die for our sins to be atoned for. Secondly, in the book of Romans, chapter 6 verse 23 it says:

“For the wages of sin is death…”

Which means that mankind couldn’t make atonement for its own sins because each individual deserves death for his own sins already. We needed someone who was not already deserving of death to make atonement; someone who was perfect. That person was Jesus. Jesus who,

“…has been tempted in every way, just as we are – yet was without sin.” (Hebrews 4:15)

This says that Jesus endured all the temptations that we have but did not give in to them. He did not sin even when faced with all the problems we are faced with. So, in summary, look at this diagram.

By Hanna Rothfuss

On the right, we have God. On the left is man. Man is hanging on to the Ten Commandments. If he breaks one of those commandments, he is in deep trouble. No matter what he does, he cannot save himself. So, we need Jesus.

He is the only one that can save us! So, that is why Jesus came 2016 years ago, (or something like that; Justin covers that in his post). That is what the baby in the manger is all about! After 33 years, He died on the cross and rose again. We were then reconciled! Justified! What good news!
So, what can you do about all this? Well, I’d like to invite you, right now, to ask Jesus for a fresh start. Ask Him to forgive you, start doing something new in your life. Will you do that with me now?
